The Algoma University Varsity Men’s Basketball team is off to a solid start to the OCAA season.

On Friday night, Algoma defeated Sault College 69-34 at Sault College to improve their record to 2-1 after splitting a pair of road games last weekend.

Algoma opened up a 38-10 lead at the half and cruised to the win. O’Brian Wallace led the way for Algoma with 14 points. Patrick Murray chipped in with 13. Erik Edwards added 11.

“We played really well in the first half,” said Algoma coach Thomas Cory. “We were actually focused defensively on what we needed to do. For the first 20 minutes on the defensive end we were really good. Because of that we got some easy layups. Once that happens, (Sault College) was on their heels defensively.”

On the Sault College side, Jason Ledgister paced the Cougars offense with 10 points.

“To be quite frank, I’m quite disappointed,” said Sault College coach Greg Mapp. “We came out flat. I was expecting more and the 35-point effort shows it. I know we’ve got a young team and there is a lot of things I’ve asked them to do…when it’s your home opener it’s a little disappointing that we came out flat like this.”

Last weekend the Algoma men split a pair of road games, beating Mohawk 80-76 and losing to Fanshawe 81-73.

Wallace led the way against Mohawk with 24 points, including six three-pointers. Dele Oworu added 14 points and Murray chipped in with 13. Ales Reis led Mohawk with 18 points.

Against Fanshawe, Murray led all scorers in the contest with 21 points. Oworu added 13 and Igor Vuckovic scored 12 in the loss. Chyro Backwood led Fanshawe with 20 points.

The Algoma women also split last weekend, beating Mohawk 69-43 and losing to Fanshawe 59-39.

Lara Stilin scored 16 points to lead the way against Mohawk while Mohawk’s Morgan Taylor scored 14 points.

Against Fanshawe Kathleen Thorburn scored 11 points while Meagan Delfre added eight. Alison Griffiths of Fanshawe led all scorers with 15 points.
