Strong, steady voter turnout at Lake Superior State University

Voters were waiting in line an hour before the polls officially opened at 7 a.m.

When the polls officially opened at 7 this morning at Lake Superior State University's Student Activity Center (SAC), many voters were waiting in line.

This morning's rainy weather did not deter people from casting their vote.

"People started lining up at 6 a.m. and once the doors opened at 7 a.m., it moved pretty quickly.  It pretty much resembles the turnout in 2020. It's been very steady throughout the morning.  We anticipate it will continue all day. I think the turn-out looks good," said Fred Pierce, Dean of Enrollment Management & Communication at LSSU.

Having LSSU be the central polling location gives the students a more convenient place to cast their vote in an election that has a lot of passion and emotion.

"It is. But what is unique about our student population is they are overall pretty quiet about it. They were doing some random interviews yesterday and students were a little hesitant to talk but a few came forward on who they were planning on voting for. The campus is a little more conservative, but we have equal representation of both sides," Pierce said.

Each precinct operates separately within the SAC.

The polls are open until 8 p.m.

If you are unsure of which precinct you vote in, call the City Clerk's Office at 906-632-5715 for assistance.
