'Seeing forward:' Sault College holds annual powwow

This year’s event took place on World Water Day

Sault College held its annual powwow in the campus Health and Wellness Centre Saturday.

This year’s event took place on World Water Day and the theme was "Niigaan Naabidaa" which means meaning "Seeing Forward." 

The Grand Entry began at 12 p.m. and a community feast was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in the college’s cafeteria. The evening Grand Entry was scheduled for 6 p.m.

The celebration included traditional drums and dancers in full regalia. People of all ages, from children to seniors, participated. Several Indigenous craft vendors were present offering a wide variety of handcrafted leatherwork, beading, moccasins and jewelry.

Several drum groups were on hand including Host Drum Warrior Bear.

Jonathan Boyer-Nolan served as master of ceremonies.

The Head Dancers were Maggie Mitchell-Aleksander and Dean Sayers. 

The feast was catered by Chris Grasley of Lil Cub Catering.

Vendors offered traditional Indigenous foods at the event.

Sponsors included the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students' Association (SASA), OLG, Dreamcatcher Charitable Fund, Nogdawindamin Family And Community Services and Gencity Inc.
