Tony Porco's Canal District Train Station will be named Monday as 2024 recipient of the city's Community Development Award.

The award was initiated by city council in 1998.

The purpose of the award program is to recognize significant achievement in community development, highlight successful development ideas and inspire other projects to meet the standards set by successful practices.

Here's the commendation, as prepared by the selection committee:

Community Development Award

On May 16, 2024 the Community Development Award Committee considered 11 nominations.

The committee recommends that the 2024 Community Development Award be presented to Canal District’s Train Station, located at 87 Huron Street.

Completed in 2021, the Train Station functions as a starting point and a destination for Sault Ste. Marie residents and visitors alike.

The Train Station is the home of the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, one of northern Ontario’s premier tourist attractions.

This beautiful building is also home to the Blockhouse Pub, an outfitters shop, and a brewery facility.

Formerly a brownfield site, the Train Station has been designed to complement the existing architectural style of the nearby Machine Shop and Algoma Conservatory of Music buildings.

This building not only enhances the visual quality of the built environment of the community, but it has helped revitalize the area into a vibrant, lively space that all of Sault Ste. Marie can be proud of.
