Lafarge Canada has always been a strong supporter of the local community, and their commitment continues to strengthen. Representatives from Lafarge Canada recently attended the Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association Wing Night fundraiser in support of the  Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association (SSMCA) Women in Trades Bursary.

The event was a great opportunity to raise money for this important bursary fund as well as to engage with industry supporters. Representatives from Lafarge were able to create meaningful connections and discuss how women thrive in their careers with the organization.

“Supporting initiatives like the Women in Trades Bursary is essential for fostering diversity and inclusion within our industry. At Lafarge Canada, we believe in the power of a diverse workforce to drive innovation and achieve sustainable growth,” says Dean MacDonald, Plant Manager, Sault Ste. Marie Ready-mix plant, Lafarge Canada (East).

Women in Trades Bursary Program

The Sault Ste. Marie Construction Association’s Women in Trades Bursary provides $2500 to a woman entering her first year of post-secondary education or apprenticeship in a skilled trades-related program.

Since Lafarge Canada’s leadership strongly believes that an inclusive workforce strengthens communities, supporting initiatives like the Women in Trades Bursary is a perfect fit.

“Having more women at Lafarge Canada enriches our team with diverse perspectives and skills, leading to better decision-making and more innovative solutions. We are proud to support and encourage women pursuing careers in the trades as well as give them a place to thrive in our organization,” says Nancy Cabral, Human Resources Director - Culture and Talent Acquisition, Lafarge Canada (East).

A Personal Perspective from the Field

Trisha Darby, Operations Specialist at the Sault Ste. Marie Plant shared her insights on her experience working at Lafarge Canada:

“I’ve always liked the quote ‘Don’t be afraid to take up space in the field’ and continue to share it with many women entering the business. With over 24 years working directly for Lafarge, the diversity and safety culture has allowed me to gain powerful knowledge that I also apply to life outside of work. If you are a woman of any age entering the construction industry for the first time, Lafarge will provide you with the environment and tools to become very successful!”

History of Community Investment

Lafarge Canada is a leader in sustainable building solutions, with the purpose of building progress for people and the planet, making its foundation in people-first business practices.

The organization works closely with local community groups like the Women in Trades Bursary Committee to ensure that anyone interested in a career in the trades has an equal opportunity to pursue their goals. Lafarge Canada’s commitment to people doesn’t end there. They also prioritize human rights, communities, and indigenous relations in their business practices here at home as well as around the world.
