When Sault College’s annual deer check stations return this fall, a new location will be added.
In addition to the St. Joseph Island Check Station, which has operated nearly continuously since 1990, a new check station will run in Echo Bay.
At both locations, second year Fish and Wildlife students will gather data from white-tailed deer harvested on St. Joseph Island (Wildlife Management Unit 45) and the mainland (Wildlife Management Unit 36), including weight, age, sex, antler beam diameter, number of points, condition of deer and general location of harvest.
That information will be shared with the local Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry biologist to help set the 2025 Deer Harvest Quota allocation.
The Echo Bay Check Station will be set up at the Pit Stop from Nov. 6 to Nov. 8, operating from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m daily.
The St. Joseph Island Check Station will be found at Stubbees Beestro from Nov. 9 to Nov. 17, operating from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
