Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie is gearing up for its second operational season while fundraising efforts and volunteer recruitment are underway.

Sheri-Ann Morin, president and founder of Superior Staff, discovered Cycling Without Age (CWA) through a Facebook video and immediately saw the potential to bring the program to Sault Ste. Marie. Founded in 2012 in Copenhagen, CWA provides free bike rides to seniors and individuals with limited mobility using a specialized bike called a Trishaw. The organization, which operates solely through volunteers, aims to combat social isolation and provide seniors with a sense of freedom.

In 2024, CWA Sault Ste. Marie launched with one Trishaw and a goal of 100 rides, surpassing expectations by completing over 250 rides and adding a second Trishaw, thanks to the Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club. Sheri-Ann credits her team’s support for making this possible, adding, “The community’s enthusiasm has been incredible.”

While Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie prepares for its second season of operations beginning in May, fundraising efforts continue to support ongoing costs that the organization incurs, including maintenance costs, liability insurance, and growing the fleet of Trishaws to fulfill a goal of having a Trishaw bike available for each long-term care home within Sault Ste. Marie.

Exciting fundraising events to look forward to include an All-You-Can-Eat Pizza and Wing Night on March 27th at Icebreakers Bar and Grill, as well as the Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie’s 9 and Dine Golf Classic, hosted by Superior Staff it on August 24th, 2025.

“The golf tournament is our biggest event, and in order to provide these services, many things need to come together. The biggest challenge is securing the necessary funding to acquire additional Trishaws and to cover operational costs. This golf tournament is significant to our continued success.” Sheri-Ann commented regarding the Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie’s 9 and Dine Golf Classic.

Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie is currently seeking sponsors for the Golf Classic. The 9 and Dine event presents an excellent opportunity for smaller and larger scale companies to support fundraising efforts while enhancing brand visibility throughout the tournament.

Cycling Without Age Sault Ste. Marie's tournament is now in its third year and continues to grow in popularity. By sponsoring or donating a prize to the event, local businesses can align themselves with a meaningful cause within the community while also enhancing their brand recognition before, during, and after the tournament.

Sheri-Ann stated, “With the support of local businesses, we can enhance the quality of life for many seniors and individuals with limited mobility with the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and engage with their community. These specialty bike rides not only improve physical and mental well-being but also foster intergenerational connections and strengthen community bonds. Without the help of local business sponsors, we would not be able to continue to grow and help our vulnerable population.”

In addition to fundraising, CWA is recruiting volunteers for the 2025 season to pilot the Trishaws. Volunteers must be 18 or older, capable of cycling for at least 30 minutes, and must commit to a minimum of three rides per month. This is a rewarding opportunity to engage with the community and improve seniors’ well-being.
