It is with great sorrow that we share the passing of local sports/hockey figure, John Longarini, in his 85th year, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday February 3, 2024. John, after the death of his wife Thelma, selflessly moved from his beloved Sault Ste Marie to Waterloo Ontario, to assist his family (son John & daughter-in-law Leslie) with his cherished grand-daughter Cassie. Dad’s presence in our life was a true gift.
Cassie was the light of his life! He was a gracious, supportive, and caring grandfather and father, enjoying life and integrating into many school and sport activities with her and family. Dad also deeply loved his sister Madelyn Newman (late Harold) and cherished nieces, Suzanne Newman (Anthony Chiverelli) and the late Diane Newman.
The “Soo” was a truly special place for Dad, and he relished his special long-time friendships with Gus Kowalski, Alfred Coletti, Brian Stocks, & Abbie Carricato, to name a few, along with countless hockey and country club cronies.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his exceptional local physicians: Dr. E Sofronova, Dr. M Al Battran and Dr. G Rosenstein, along with his specialists at Sunnybrook: Dr. D Kucey, Dr. B Goldman & Dr. R Maggisano, all who played a key pivotal role in his well being and overall care. We cannot express our gratitude to thank you enough for your professionalism, time, and patience consistently provided, it meant the world to him and us.
As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family ceremony. A public celebration of John’s life (in Sault Ste. Marie) will be announced at a later date. Donations can be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation through www.erbgood.com.
