With shattered hearts, we sadly announce the passing of our very own superhero, suddenly but peacefully at home just 3 days after his 38th birthday.
Jamie was the much-loved son of Chris and Heather, ‘little’ big brother and best friend of Ryan (Megan) and adored uncle of Mr. Emmett and Miss Kendall as he affectionately called them. Jamie will be missed terribly by his Nana Sharon Gascon. Cherished great nephew of Bob Hicks (late Sheryl) and the late Bradly Spurway. His infectious smile, quick wit, interest in current events, knowledge of the entertainment world and passion for the Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs will be remembered fondly by his friends and cousins, especially Judy Duffy, Patricia Hicks and Denise Hicks.
Jamie was a true warrior whose strength, determination and positive mindset inspired many. He did not let the realities of muscular dystrophy define him and defied the odds right up until the moment his heart needed to rest. Chris and Heather are deeply grateful to Dawn Couturier, Jennifer Ball, Debbie Macdonald and the other nurses who provided support over these last 9 years so that Jamie could live his best possible life comfortably at home. The grace and dignity that Dr. O’ Brien, Dr. Fera and Dr. Apostle gifted Jamie in their very recent interactions with him are valued beyond measure. Thank you also to Susan Seguin, Paramedics Mark Bettello and his shift partner and OPP Sergeant Mark DiPasquale for the kindness and compassion you provided in the moments after our lives were forever changed.
To honour Jamie’s memory, donations (online or by cheque) to the Sault Ste. Marie Professional Firefighter Association would be appreciated by the family as the Association’s support was instrumental in helping to navigate equipment and accessibility needs in the early years of his journey.
Respecting Jamie’s wishes, a private celebration of life will take place at a future date at the home he shared with his parents on the shores of Lake Superior.
Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home- Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. -705-759-2522). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be offered at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Hicks family.

And everything I would like to be
I can fly higher than an eagle
You are the wind beneath my wings" -Bette Midler
