St. Mary’s Cemetery tour

The Chippewa County Historical Society is sponsoring a Cemetery Tour on Saturday, October 11, at 1 p.m.

It will be the first tour to take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, the Catholic section of Riverside Cemetery, on Riverside Drive, south of Three Mile Road. St. Mary’s Cemetery was opened in 1901, after the closing of Maple Ridge Cemetery.

CCHS Board member and author Caroline Grabowski will lead the tour with the assistance of storytellers Jim and Mary Couling.

Caroline will assume the role of Maggie McDonald, who passed away in 1912 at age 64.

Join the tour and learn more about her and other residents of St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The event is a fundraiser for the Chippewa County Historical Society; the suggested donation is $5 per person.

Please dress for the weather and wear walking shoes.

There will be refreshments available.

Watch for signs directing you to the designated parking areas.

A program prepared by Caroline Grabowski and CCHS Board member Paul Sabourin will be available for purchase, along with Caroline’s book, Headstones and Headlines from Sault Ste. Marie’s Historic Past.

For more information on the tour, call 906-635-7082 or check the Historical Society’s website www.cchsmi.com.
