December 16, 2019, was a memorable date for Jill White, owner and operator of the popular Home Bakehouse & Café. That is the date one of her dreams came true.
“Opening this business was a lifelong plan for myself,” shares White. “To prepare, I took the Hotel Restaurant Management and the Chef program at Sault College.”
She shares this dream with her husband, Liam, who is the co-owner of the business and the head baker and chef. He is in charge of the famous sourdough goods they produce.
“Our cafe items are prepared with care and all sandwiches are made with our sourdough breads,” says White. “Our sourdough starter is named Magnus and he is three years old. Our breads are a minimum of 36 hours ferment, with smaller breads, such as the bagels being a longer ferment. We make many varieties and you can find our sourdough breads in five other local cafes and eateries in town.”
White continues, “Our specialties are fermented foods! We make everything on site and use as many local products and ingredients as possible. Our sourdough breads, bagels, English muffins, and brioche are unmatched in our area!”
Other items include sourdough Danish, cinnamon buns, brownies, twists, French macarons, specialty bars, cookies, and much more.
“We have a full espresso bar as well as locally roasted fair-trade organic coffee and teas. We have skilled baristas and a beautiful new espresso machine imported from Italy,” she adds.
As the Home Bakehouse & Café celebrates its 5th anniversary, White shares some of the many benefits of eating sourdough bread.
Fermented foods have been around for centuries, cherished for their unique flavours and health benefits. Sourdough breads and baked goods are a delicious and nutrient-packed way to enjoy fermented foods.
Sourdough is particularly notable because of the starter, a mixture of water and flour fermented with wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria. This natural fermentation process gives sourdough its tangy taste, chewy texture, and incredible health benefits. These benefits include improved digestion due to the fermentation process breaking down complex carbohydrates, making them easier for the body to digest and making more nutrients bioavailable. Sourdough also supports a healthy gut microbiome due to high levels of pre and probiotics.
