As part of Algoma University’s ongoing efforts to increase international partnerships, and create new exchange opportunities for students and faculty, the Experiential Learning and International Affairs team recently signed memorandums of understanding (MOU’s) with two prominent Belgian universities, Thomas More University of Applied Sciences (TM) and Howest University of Applied Sciences (HUAS).
Algoma University students will now be able to study, conduct research, or complete an internship in Belgium as a part of their undergraduate experience. Students will gain valuable global experience while developing intercultural communication skills. These agreements will also provide staff and faculty exchange opportunities, COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), and international research opportunities at both institutions.
“This agreement adds diversity to our portfolio of international partnerships, by bringing Belgian perspectives to Algoma and providing important language-learning and international cross-cultural academic opportunities for Algoma University students,” noted Dr. Donna Rogers, Vice-President Academic and Research. “Building international connections and providing experiential learning opportunities for students through internationalization is a key strategic direction of Algoma University’s 2021-2026 Academic Plan.”
Thomas More is the largest university of applied sciences in Flanders, offering more than 30 Dutch-taught and a range of English-taught bachelor degree programmes and postgraduates in the province of Antwerp.
“Thomas More (Belgium) is eager to extend its collaborations in Canada to Algoma University. We see potential in many areas. Currently, we are already engaged in ‘Collaborative Online International Learning' (COIL) between the faculties of Biomedical Laboratory Technology and Business Management,” stated Inge Vervoort, Head of the International Office, at Thomas More University. “ Inclusion and diversity are part of Thomas More’s mission and vision. As a nation, Canada is known for its high standards in promoting independent living, accessibility and respect for diversity. Country indexes show that Canada can be taken as a reference in relation to those topics. So also in this regard, we hope to exchange good practices and theories.”
