Thunderbirds thwart Beavers comeback bid with overtime victory

The Soo Thunderbirds overcame a three-goal comeback by the Blind River Beavers Friday night to pick up an overtime victory in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play.

James McDowall scored with with 49 seconds to go in the extra frame to give the Thunderbirds a 4-3 win at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring twice before the game was six minutes old.

Jonathan Sonedecker opened the scoring before Callum McAuley added to the lead just over two minutes later.

Sonedecker scored his second of the day to give the Thunderbirds a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

On a power play early in the second period, Owen King got Blind River on the board.

Jonah McIndoo pulled Blind River to within one at 3:49 of the third period to make it closer and A.J. Saadeh tied the game for the Beavers with just under six minutes to go in regulation time, setting the stage for McDowall's game winner.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as the Beavers host Kirkland Lake, while the Thunderbirds entertain the rival Soo Eagles in a pair of 7 p.m. starts.
