As the Sault Storm begins its season on the road at North Bay, the Sault Sabercats open their Ontario Varsity Football League campaign at Sarnia against the Lions. The Sabercats, under the direction of president/head coach Ross Viotto, are a first-year entry in the OVFL. The OVFL is an age-restricted (15-19) league featuring three divisions and 16 teams. The Sabercats have been training hard for a month and with 45 players, Viotto is looking forward to the thrill of competition. "We're ready," he said. "We're anxious and well-prepared." Former Sir James Dunn Eagles' high school standout Travis McLean will start at quarterback for the Sabercats, who also feature running back Josh Gauthier, fresh from a fine high school career with the Bawating Braves. Viotto likes the Sabercat defence led by linebackers Joel Aro, Sean Pratt and Adam Ross and feels his team is ready for the rigours of the OVFL. Just as the Storm opens at home on Sat. June 8, so do the Sabercats, as part of a doubleheader at Rocky DiPietro Field. The Sabercats will play the Guelph Bears that day at 1 p.m. followed by the Storm at 7 p.m.
