Spartans hand Lakers their second shutout loss of season

MSU scores two late-period goals in 4-0 win

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Eleventh-ranked Michigan State handed 17th-ranked Lake Superior State its second shutout loss of the season by blanking the Lakers 4-0 Saturday at Munn Arena.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association game was televised live on FSN Detroit in front of a near sellout crowd of 6,653 fans.

Michigan State (16-8-1 overall, 12-6-1 CCHA), which improved to 10-1-1 in Munn Arena, got goals from Bryan Lerg and Daniel Vukovic during the final minute of the first and second periods. It was the 10th and 11th last-minute goals scored by the Spartans this season.

Chris Mueller and Jim McKenzie also scored for MSU, which swept the series.

Spartan goaltender Jeff Lerg totaled 27 saves and improved to 16-8-1. LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (8-8-3) totaled 26 saves.

The Lakers were 0-for-5 on the power play, while MSU finished 1-for-4.

LSSU returns home to play host to Ohio State at 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Lake Superior State's only other shutout loss this season was 1-0 at Ohio State on Oct. 13. The Lakers bounced back to win the second game of the series, 7-6 in overtime.
