Lake Superior Figure Skating Club alumni senior figure skaters, Emma Carlucci and Simone Thibodeau have had a great season skating with the University of Guelph’s Varsity Gryphon Figure Skating team.

Both skaters were members of the Gryphon Synchronized skating team. Carlucci also represent the team in Star 10 Free Skate, while Thibodeau competed in Ice Dance.

The Gryphons recently competed in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Figure Skating Championships in Aylmer, Ont.

There were 10 teams in total from universities across Ontario. Carlucci skated into a bronze medal with her Star 10 Free Skate. Carlucci and Thibodeau’s Gryphon Synchro team captured a silver medal, and the Gryphon Varsity team also went home with a silver medal after ranking second overall.

“It’s wonderful that Skate Canada offers this OUA opportunity for skaters to continue to compete while attending university," said LSFSC head coach Kerry Bain. "We couldn’t be more proud of these skaters (Carlucci and Thibodeau). They set a great example for our younger skaters who may be considering skating at the varsity university level one day."

Varsity figure skating is currently offered only by OUA in partnership with Skate Canada. Ten Ontario Conference universities compete annually for the top spot at the invitational competitions and the OUA Figure Skating Championships.

The Lake Superior Figure Skating Club board of directors is proud of the accomplishments of their alumni skaters Carlucci and Thibodeau.
