Lakers split at University of Michigan

The Lake State Lakers hockey team went on the road and split a pair of games at the University of Michigan

It was a non-conference series against a former rival for the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team over the weekend at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Lakers picked up a split against the University of Michigan in a two-game weekend series that wrapped up on Saturday night.

The Lakers opened the weekend set with a 3-1 win on Friday night. Goaltender Gordon Defiel made 29 saves while Gage Torrel paced the Lakers with a goal and an assist.

Josh Nenadal and Luke Morgan also scored for the Lakers. Diego Cuglietta assisted on two goals for Lake State as the Lakers snapped a five-game losing skid.

Tony Calderone had the lone goal for Michigan in Friday’s loss.

On Saturday night, the Wolverines rebounded for a 4-1 victory.

James Sanchez had a goal and an assist for Michigan. Calderone, Nolan De Jong and Nicholas Boka also scored for the Wolverines. Goaltender Zach Nagelvoort stopped 22 shots.

C.J. Hayes had the lone Lakers goal. Defiel stopped 26 shots.

The Lakers overall record sits at 7-7-0 (4-6-0-0 in conference action) with the split.

The Lakers return to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend with a pair of home games against Bowling Green. The weekend series opens on Friday night with a 7:37 p.m. start at Taffy Abel Arena.
