Harnden opens provincials with two wins

Ryan Harnden skipped his team to a pair of wins to open the Northern Ontario Junior Men's Curling Championship on Thursday at the Soo Curlers Association.

Harnden, with Clint Cudmore, Johnny Miners and Steve Molodovich, recorded an 11-6 win over Sudbury's Ryan Lily in the first draw of the round robin before nipping Fort Frances' Adam Bolen 9-8.

At 2-0, Harnden currently shares the lead in the standings.

Harnden, who is being coached by former Brier rep Eric Harnden, is back in action with two games on Friday. At 9 a.m., the local rink faces Thunder Bay's Eric Theriault (2-0) before meeting Timmins' Mark Greco (1-1) at 1:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the final draw is scheduled for 9 a.m. with the top two teams advancing to the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

The Soo Curlers Association is also hosting the Northern Ontario Junior Women's Curling Championships although no local entries are participating.

Sudbury's Tracy Horgan leads the four-team women's standings at 2-0.
