The following statement was issued at 2:20 p.m. today by the Ontario Provincial Police, which has taken over the investigation of this morning's crash at Black Road and McNabb that claimed the life of City Police Constable Don Doucet:
*********************** One person in custody after a crash claims the life of a Sault Ste. Marie City Police officer
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have asked the Ontario Provincial Police to investigate a collision that claimed the life of Constable Donald Doucet [shown], a 12-year veteran of the Sault Ste. Marie City Police Service.
This morning at 2:40 a.m. a Sault Ste Marie Police Service vehicle became involved in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Black Road and McNabb Street in the City of Sault Ste Marie.
Constable Doucet was the passenger in the police vehicle.
He was rushed to Sault Area Hospital where he died of his injuries.
The driver of the cruiser has been treated and released.
The operator and lone occupant, of the second vehicle was also treated and released from hospital
As a result of this crash, the Sault Ste. Marie OPP have a 29-year-old female from the Sault Ste. Marie area in custody.
She will appear in bail court tomorrow morning.
Further information on the charges and the identity of the accused will be released when court documents are filed on Monday morning.
Members of the OPP North East Region Traffic and Marine Unit, OPP Technical Identification Services, Technical Traffic Collision Investigators and a Technical Traffic Collision Reconstructionists are at the scene.
Members of the Sault Ste Marie OPP Crime Unit are also assisting in the investigation.
