A milestone event is happening in Sault Ste. Marie on February 22, and everyone is going to want to be included!
“February 22 is the 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie Snowarama for Easter Seals Kids, presented by The Sault Trailblazers,” explained Community Engagement Officer for Easter Seals Ontario in Sault Ste. Marie, Carolyn Bunting O'Connor.
According to O’Connor, the event was started in 1975 by “Whipper” Billy Watson in order to bring communities together in support of a worthy cause. Each year, snowmobilers in the area hit the trails to raise money for children and youth with physical disabilities.
This year on February 22, Snowarama participants in the Soo will gather at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club for breakfast, snowmobile to Searchmont Ski Resort for lunch, and then finish their day back at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club. It’s a day of camaraderie, a day out on the sleds, and a day of raising funds for an important cause.
O’Connor added, “Participants who raise a minimum of $150 will receive breakfast, lunch, and $25 gas top up. The more money each participant raises, the more ballots he or she will receive for a chance to win some of the many prizes donated by local businesses. Easter Seals Ontario also offers incentive prizes based on funds raised.”
Funds raised at the event go toward Easter Seals Ontario’s programs and services, O’Connor further explained.
She added, “Charities across Canada are facing heightened challenges, making the dedication of the Snowarama community more important than ever. The contributions from these events will play an important role in ensuring the organization can continue delivering essential programs and services to the hundreds of families who rely on them each year.”

“This is a family-friendly event that brings our community together year after to year to make a real difference in the lives of kids with physical disabilities and their families,” said O’Connor.
She finished, “The commitment and compassion we have seen from the community over the years is truly inspiring. And we can boast that the snow machine community from Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area has been involved from the beginning: 50 years of making a positive impact on families in need!”
