The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is advising the public of a chance for "substantial runoff" from rain that is expected over the coming days.

The conservation authority said it is issuing a Flood Outlook Statement regarding current watershed conditions as a result.

"A low-pressure system is expected to bring significant rainfall today through Saturday night," the conservation authority said in a release.

"The forecast predicts heavy rain with potential two-day accumulations ranging from 25-40 mm, and an additional 10-20 mm possible due to localized thunderstorms.

"As of the latest observations, local rivers, creeks, and streams are flowing at normal levels. However, the anticipated rainfall, combined with potential high-intensity thunderstorms, is likely to generate substantial runoff. This may increase the risk of overland flow and localized flooding in low-lying areas, regions with poor drainage, and urbanized zones."

The conservation authority said the flood control channels it maintains are currently flowing at normal levels.

But with the forecasted heavy rainfall, these channels are expected to see a rise in water levels.

"It is crucial to note that water in rivers, streams, and channels will be fast flowing during and after the rainfall event.

"Residents and visitors are strongly advised to stay away from flood control channels and all waterways. Fast-moving water and slippery stream banks present significant hazards.

"Please ensure that children and pets are kept away from waterways during this time."

Flood forecasting and warning are part of the conservation authority’s provincially mandated responsibilities.
