Western University has confirmed that Maija Nenonen, of Sault Ste. Marie, was the victim of a fatal incident in London on Monday.

Sault Ste. Marie native and Western University student, Maija Nenonen, has been identified as the student who died after being hit by a vehicle in London Ont. on Monday.

A Twitter statement from university president Alan Shepard reads:

“I am terribly saddened to share that Maija Nenonen, an Honours Business Administration student in her first year at the Ivey School of Business, was the victim of the tragic traffic incident off-campus yesterday.”

Few details have been released by police, who said the driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene.

A landscaping truck and trailer could be seen in the parking lot on Monday, which was cordoned off with police tape, says a Global News report.

Nenonen was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not publicly identified her as the victim.

“Maija started at Western in Health Science in 2018 and after three years in Health Science, transferred to Ivey. Maija’s family shared that she had dreamt of attending Western well before applying for schools in Grade 12,” wrote Shepard.

Nenonen began her time at Western four years ago as a health science student in 2018, transferring to Ivey in 2021.
