The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board’s fifth Summer Learning Program is successfully engaging 170 Kindergarten to Grade 5 students at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School.

The program started on Monday, July 9 and runs until Friday, July 27. The Summer Learning Program is for students to sustain or improve their literacy and numeracy skills, while engaging in exciting cultural and recreational activities. Stephanie Vendramin, site administrator, stated, “In the SLP we strive to build students’ self-confidence and minimize their summer learning loss by engaging them in meaningful learning opportunities.”

While supporting the students, the staff also wants to support the families with available resources so the children’s learning can continue at home.

“We provide parent workshops on topics, such as Anxiety and Fears in Children, an Overview of Triple P, and Zones of Regulation. Families are also invited to the Open House/Sharing of Learning to witness firsthand the students’ academic progress and well-being,” said Vendramin.

With the integration of technology, students are provided the opportunity to problem solve using real world applications. Using robots, students are learning the language of computers through coding. “In an era where there is much leading-edge technology available to students, we have integrated the use of Chromebooks, computational thinking, coding, and robotics into the SLP. Educators explore the possibilities of technology for learning and students respond eagerly, totally immersed and engaged in the learning,” stated Superintendent of Education, Maria Esposito.

Grade 5 student Bethany excitedly exclaimed, “My favourite thing about the Summer Learning Program is robotics. I like robotics because I like controlling and programming them. It was a great experience!”

The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board would like to thank the SLP site administrator, entire staff, volunteers, students and families for a most successful 5th SLP in the Huron-Superior CDSB.

Elizabeth Felice, parent of a Grade 2 student in the SLP stated, “Thank you for igniting his desire for independent reading and his continuing growth in this area. He has also demonstrated a desire to continue exploring the robotics program that he experienced at the SLP. Thank you all for advocating, assisting and championing the success of each student.”
