The old legion comes crashing down (10 photos)

Sault Ste. Marie landmark first opened its doors in 1967

The building that has been home to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 for more than half a century is coming down.

SooToday spotted crews demolishing the former legion headquarters Tuesday morning, reducing it to rubble.

A new nine-storey, 107-unit veteran housing project - along with new branch facilities - will be constructed on the site of the existing branch.

It is anticipated the new building will open in 2024. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 will be temporarily housed in the Marconi Cultural Event Centre until then.

The former legion building first opened its doors at the corner of Great Northern Road and Willoughby Street in 1967.
