A police bomb squad unit was dispatched to the Civic Centre this morning after a suspicious item was discovered in council chambers.
Rooms were cleared and parts of Foster Drive were closed off around 11:30 a.m. while police determined the threat level, said Sgt. Brent Ralph of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
“We leave it up to the people who work there to determine what might be suspicious,” said Ralph.
In this case, some kind of weight or sandbag was left behind by a camera crew, likely from city council meeting coverage, said Ralph.
“It was really nothing,” he said.
Ralph noted that police take every threat seriously, but once it was discovered to be a harmless item city hall workers were allowed to resume their workday.
