Students craft get-well cards for patients at Sault Area Hospital

Kiwedin Public School students got help from artist and teacher Shannon Ramsay to offer well wishes to patients who may not have family or friends to visit them

A local public school is learning the importance of helping others by partnering with the Sault Area Hospital to make get-well cards for patients who may not have family or friends to visit them.

Kiwedin Public School Grade 5/6 teacher Shannon Ramsay taught the art curriculum using real-world experiences to help deepen her students’ learning and to help brighten the day for patients.

The project was initiated by Ian Espeut, transformation and partnerships coordinator at SAH who reached out to Kiwedin principal Natasha Court, asking if she would be interested in assisting with the project, the school said in a news release.

“I knew exactly the teacher and class that I would ask to help with this project,” Court said.

"Shannon Ramsay is an amazing artist and teacher, and I knew she would make this project an exciting one for her students to participate in.”

Project-based learning is an approach to teaching and learning that focuses on students solving real-world problems, Court said.

“Students jumped at the opportunity to help others and were able to participate in an authentic experience connected to community outside of the classroom. This is when the best learning occurs.”

The class at the North Street school worked on the cards using watercolour and ink.

The cards will be delivered to patients next week in the hopes that the beautiful artwork made by local students will help lift the spirits of patients in the hospital.
