Connie has worked tirelessly to address the complex challenges of addiction, homelessness, and social vulnerability in Sault Ste. Marie. She founded SOYA (Save Our Young Adults from Substance Abuse), a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to connecting individuals in need with life-saving resources. Her compassion, determination, and innovative spirit have saved lives and transformed countless futures.

“For nearly two decades, Connie has been a lifeline for countless individuals and families in our city,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “As the founder of SOYA, her unwavering dedication to tackling addiction, homelessness, and social vulnerability is nothing short of extraordinary. Connie’s compassion and hands-on approach inspire us all to take action, proving that one person truly can change lives and build a stronger, more caring community.”

After witnessing the devastating impact of substance abuse on her family and friends – and recognizing a critical gap in the local support systems – Connie started SOYA. It has grown into a vital support network for individuals battling substance use disorders. Under Connie’s leadership, SOYA now operates a resource depot offering free clothing, footwear, household items, hygiene products, and food. Connie often prepares and distributes meals, exemplifying her hands-on commitment to those in need. She has also driven individuals across Ontario to access detox and rehabilitation services, ensuring timely care for vulnerable individuals.

In addition to direct support, Connie is a tireless advocate for systemic change. She collaborates with local government, law enforcement, healthcare providers, and community organizations to improve services and combat stigma. Her advocacy includes public education initiatives, family support groups, and events such as the annual International Overdose Awareness Day. Most recently, she was critical in supporting the City’s efforts to secure a HART (Homelessness, Addictions Recovery & Treatment) Hub in Sault Ste. Marie by organizing the submission of hundreds of letters from community members.

Connie’s impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, Algoma Public Health recognized her with the Public Health Champion Award for her leadership during the opioid crisis, and she has also been honored by the Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie for her humanitarian efforts.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie awards the Medal of Merit to individuals or groups who have achieved exceptional honours in athletics, cultural, or academic fields or make extraordinary community contributions.
