City Councillor Matthew Shoemaker joined Steve Paikin on TVO’s ‘The Agenda’ to discuss former Ontario Premier Sir William H. Hearst.

The segment, “Remembering Sir William H. Hearst” is now available online at The Agenda Website. The cable air-date for the segment has not yet been confirmed.

Shoemaker states, “It was an immense pleasure to join Steve to discuss a prominent Saultite and how he’s impacted our City and our Province. I am grateful to The Agenda for focusing on Premier Hearst’s career and for providing all Ontarians with an understanding of Hearst’s importance.”

Hearst, the 7th Premier of Ontario and the first Premier from Northern Ontario, was the MPP from Sault Ste. Marie from 1908-1919. From 1914-1919, Hearst served as Premier of Ontario.

His term in office coincided with and was dominated by World War I. Hearst’s major achievements include recognizing women’s right to vote, creating the Ministry of Labour, the province’s first Workmen’s Compensation Act, and the largest hydro-electric generation project in history up to that time, the Chippewa Project.

Hearst was inducted into the Sault Ste. Marie Walk of Fame in 2013. In 2015, Sault Ste. Marie renamed the civic holiday Sir William H. Hearst Day, in his honour.
