A candidate with a proven track record of bringing new energy and fresh ideas to City Council is seeking a second term representing Ward 3.

On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, Matthew Shoemaker filed his nomination papers for re-election in Ward 3. Shoemaker has served as a Ward 3 City Councillor since 2014 and hopes to be able to continue his work on behalf of residents in the upcoming term of Council. Shoemaker is also a practicing lawyer with Wishart Law Firm LLP, as well as a new dad.

“I’m excited to put my record before the people of Ward 3,” says Shoemaker. “As a member of council, I’ve been dedicated to being a strong voice for Ward 3 while getting results for all of Sault Ste. Marie. If re-elected, I will continue to provide that same dedication at City Hall.”

In his four years at City Hall, Shoemaker has put nearly 150 new ideas before Council for consideration. Among his most significant accomplishments, he has spearheaded the reduction in the size of City Council from 12 members to 10 members, has led transparency efforts such as video-recording closed City Council meetings, has championed a staff and council wage freeze that saved over $200,000, and was the driving force behind the re-design of the Sault flag.

“It’s been an active four years, but the work isn’t done yet,” remarks Shoemaker. “We need to keep working to make our City an innovative and forward-thinking place, one that can compete in tomorrow’s economy while providing great opportunities for residents, businesses, and visitors.”

A lifelong Sault Ste. Marie resident, Shoemaker is a graduate of Algoma University and St. Mary’s College. After graduating from Algoma U, Shoemaker attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his law degree. Shoemaker has been passionate about improving the community since before his election in 2014, and his passion for Sault Ste. Marie continues to drive him.

“A lot of good has been accomplished over the last four years, but the next four years will be just as crucial. I will continue to support bold actions to encourage economic development, to make our municipal government more efficient and effective, and to keep our Council accountable to the public. I look forward to discussing these issues and many more at the doorsteps of Ward 3 during the campaign,” says Shoemaker.
