Several new wildfires confirmed in northeast

New fire activity is in the Timmins, Parry Sound and Cochrane districts, AFFES says

There are currently 16 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region, all of which are being observed, fire officials say

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services for the Northeast Fire Region is reporting several new wildfires over the past two days.

The AFFES says there were two new wildland fire reports confirmed after its July 29 report, and three new confirmed fires July 30:

  • Parry Sound 4 (PAR004) was a 0.5 hectare wildland fire that was confirmed the evening of July 29, and it was called out early Tuesday evening. This fire was located about 7.5 km southeast of Byng Inlet on the east side of Highway 529. One FireRanger crew was committed to this fire.
  • Cochrane 26 (COC026) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that was confirmed the evening of July 29. This fire was located on the west side of Winisk River just south of Peawanuck, and it was quickly actioned by the Coastal Ranger and the Peawanuck Wildfire Brigade Monday afternoon. The fire was called out Tuesday morning.
  • Cochrane 27 (COC027) is a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is located about 58 km northeast of Big Trout Lake in the Far North. The status of this fire is being observed.
  • Parry Sound 5 (PAR005) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that was called out early this evening. This fire was located on an island on Red Chalk Lake about 2.5 km south of Maple Ridge. There was one FireRanger crew committed to this fire.
  • Timmins 8 (TIM008) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that was called out early this evening. This fire was located about 14 km north of Highway 101 and about 27 km northeast of Foleyet. There was one FireRanger crew and one helicopter dedicated to this fire.

There are currently 16 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region, all of which are being observed, the AFFES said.

It said the fire hazard is low north of the Highway 11 corridor and along the James Bay coast then moderate to high along the Hudson Bay coast.

The fire hazard is moderate for areas around Wawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Temiskaming Shores, Greater Sudbury and North Bay. The fire hazard is high for areas between Highways  129 and 144, and east of Parry Sound and Powassan.
