When she's not styling hair, running marathons, scuba diving or doting on her three grandchildren, Debbie Furoy is volunteering to make Elliot Lake a better place to live.
The owner of Blondie's Hair Care was honoured yesterday as the East Algoma OPP's first-ever Volunteer of the Year. Our photo shows Debbie with Inspector Lynn McCaig of East Algoma OPP and Lorna Swift, wife of Jack Swift, for whome the n ew award is named.
Here's what the Ontario Provincial Police tell us about Debbie Furoy:
*************************** Ms. Furoy was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario.
She moved to Elliot Lake with her family in 1973.
Debbie is the proud mother or 2 boys and 3 grandchildren.
Ms. Furoy has been the owner and operator of Blondie’s Hair Care since 1988.
Debbie enjoys scuba diving, running and completed one triathlon and marathon.
Since 1973 she has been involved with many volunteer organizations such as Cadets, Karate Club, Teen Town, Special Olympics and organized the Miss Elliot Lake pageant for several years.
She currently volunteers at the Camillus Centre and is a Board Member of the Family Life Centre.
Debbie joined the Citizens Aiding Police Service committee in 1998.
She has assisted and participated in many police week events.
Ms. Furoy spearheaded the birth of the Annual Police Officers Ball and just hosted the fifth ball in 2003.
Debbie is currently the chair of the C.A.P.S. committee and has held this position for the last two years.
Her enthusiasm is an inspiration to all.
The sentence "can't do this" does not exist in her vocabulary.
It is fitting that she be the first recipient of this award as Debbie is a dedicated volunteer who gives of herself in heart, soul and mind.
