If you are planning to make a fire in your backyard, you need to obtain or renew a permit, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services said in a news release issued today.

Only those with a permit will be allowed to burn.

Since all fire halls remain closed to the public, the permits are issued online or by phone.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services also asks residents to continue to burn cautiously, following the open-air burning regulations for the Municipality of Sault Ste. Marie. Certified propane and natural gas fire pits, fireplaces, or fire tables do not need an open-air burning permit.

To extend a current permit or receive a new one, visit the website, or call at 705-949–3333, and press ‘3’ for open-air burning during office hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
