Sault firefighters recognized for life-saving rescue

Marie Fire Services Chief Peter Johnson and senior management for saving an individual from a second-story apartment fire in the 200 block of Wellington Street West April 25.

Five members of Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services have been recognized for their live-saving efforts in rescuing an unconscious individual from the second floor of a building during an apartment fire this past spring.

Captains Jason Jaremko and Steve Foster, along with firefighters Aidan Wright, Brandon Hayes and Vince Caputo, have been presented with a Fire Chiefs Citation from Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services Chief Peter Johnson and senior management for actions that encompass the vision, mission and core values of the fire department. 

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services was dispatched to a report of a fire in the 200 block of Wellington St. West during the morning hours of April 25. 

Fire services discovered heavy smoke coming from a second floor window upon arrival. Firefighters made entry and proceeded to the second floor to conduct a primary search. During the search firefighters located an unconscious individual and proceeded to remove them from the apartment.

Once out of the building, fire crews provided basic life support to the individual until EMS arrived on scene. The individual was transported to Sault Area Hospital.

“The combined efforts of all Sault Ste. Marie emergency services resulted in saving the individual's life,” said the fire chief, in an email to SooToday Wednesday.
