SANDRA HOLLINGSWORTH, WARD 2 CANDIDATE

*************************
Sandra Hollingsworth announced her candidacy for the Ward 2 seat left vacant by newly-elected MP Terry Sheehan.

Having been born and raised in Ward 2, Sandra’s roots run deep.

"I firmly believe that Sault Ste. Marie continues to thrive because of the strength of our citizens, local businesses, and industry, however further work is needed to ensure positive growth for the future of our community,” said Sandra. “As a member of city council, I am ready to listen and act on behalf of the residents of Ward 2. Members of council need to be ambassadors or champions for the city, promoting growth by supporting initiatives that will strengthen us now and into the future. I look forward to being an ambassador for the residents of Ward 2 and the city.”

Sandra knows that job creation and expansion of the population will grow the tax base and contribute to affordable living in Sault Ste. Marie.

“We are a caring community and we need to also grow community philanthropy.” Our local businesses and industries give back a lot and that has become part of our very fabric. A strong and balanced community that not only grows its community base, but gives back, creates opportunities for everyone.”

Sandra worked for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Toronto and Vancouver, in business strategy, for over 10 years and led the Research and Education Foundation for the College of Family Physicians of Canada for 8 years.

She holds a Bachelor of Economics Degree and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Since her return home, she has been actively involved in the Algoma Conservatory of Music and recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Northern Ontario Angels Group.

Sandra is passionate about not only being the voice for the residents of Ward 2, but for the business community.

She believes that attracting new companies to the city is important, and supporting the needs of existing businesses is just as vital.

Small shops and larger businesses can employ 2 to 200 or more staff, but they all create jobs and retention of these positions is critical to Sault Ste. Marie’s economy.

A community truly is strong when its citizens, businesses and industry work together to build a safe and prosperous environment for our families.

When asked why she is interested in serving as a city councillor, Sandra said it is because she firmly believes we have untapped potential in becoming a community that families and youth will want to either return to or re-locate to (as she did).

"It seems that individuals and families are moving away from large urban cities because of high living costs, safety, and crowding; with the right stakeholders and leaders in place, I am confident Sault Ste. Marie has the potential to attract these groups. Sault Ste. Marie requires strong individuals with leadership ideas who care passionately about the future of the city, and I am that person."
