PHOTO GALLERY: Station Mall opened 50 years ago today

A downtown staple for exactly half a century, the Sault's main shopping centre is about to get a $60M facelift — including a massive entertainment complex and new retailers

Fifty years ago today — on Halloween 1973 — Station Mall opened its doors to excited shoppers in Sault Ste. Marie.

"Year-round indoor shopping comfort in the heart of downtown," declared a full-page newspaper ad, promoting the Oct. 31 grand opening.

"There are no meters to watch, no parking tickets to pay when you shop at Station Mall," the ad continued. "There's a parking space waiting for you!"

Five decades later, the Sault's signature shopping centre is getting a $60-million facelift.

As SooToday has previously reported, the massive renovation plan — scheduled for completion early next year — will include a 50,000 square-foot entertainment complex, a dining sports bar and restaurant, and several new retailers.

The downtown mall will also feature new electric vehicle charging stations in the main parking lot.

In the meantime — to mark the mall's 50th birthday — take a trip down memory lane in the above photo gallery.
