SooToday has received the following note from Tammy Fiegehen who wants to share the latest developments in a noteable community development program staff and students at White Pines have taken the lead in with accompaniment by other schools, Future SSM, Kerri Braido, Hollie Filice and Sarah Constable.

White Pines Bringing New Life to Old Pianos

Working with Future SSM, Kerri Braido, Hollie Filice and Sarah Constable, White Pines art students were given the special opportunity to design art to paint on timeworn pianos.

Students competently implemented the skills that they have been taught in their grade 9 classes by their teachers Rob Zago and Tammy Fiegehen. Students followed a rotation of activities, music, phys-ed, foods lab as well as painted vintage pianos during the two days that they attended White Pines, March 15 and 16.

It was a whirlwind of activities for the students and the excitement was tangible.

Four elementary schools, East View, Grandview, Anna McCrea and Pinewood students from grades 4 to grade 6 classes participated in this exciting event. The brightly painted pianos will be relocated in the downtown core area of Sault Ste. Marie.

They will be a fun and interactive attraction that will engage their audience by combining eye-catching visual art with music, bringing new life to old pianos. The pianos will be displayed for anyone in the public to play and enjoy.

“It has been a really fun project for our Grade 9 students. Our hope is that by placing these pianos into a public space, they will engage our community and help to break down social walls and barriers as the same project has attempted to do in other communities.”
