City Council will be asked Monday to agree to removing traffic lights at the three-legged intersection of Huron Street and Wellington Street West.

Carl Rumiel, a city design and construction engineer, has been pushing this year to have the lights permanently removed during this summer's reconstruction of the Fort Creek aqueduct along Wellington Street West from St. Andrew's Terrace to Carmen's Way.

But councillors decided at their May 18 meeting to postpone the decision until assurances could be given that on-street parking in the area wouldn't be affected.

Now, Rumiel says a review of the intersection by traffic specialist CIMA+ confirms that the intersection will work just fine with just a stop sign placed on Huron St.

Rumiel described some proposed changes to the intersection design:

"CIMA+ has made some further recent recommendations to implement a bump-out of the intersection which will allow the stop bar to be further out into the road way and thus increase the sight distance to ensure on-street parking is not affected," he said.

Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m.
