A candidate who promises to bring new energy and fresh ideas has entered the race for city council.

On Monday June 16, Matthew Shoemaker officially filed his nomination papers to run in Ward Three.

Shoemaker currently works as a lawyer with Wishart Law Firm LLP and teaches part-time at Sault College.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to stand as a candidate for city council in Ward Three,” says Shoemaker. “As a member of council, I will be dedicated to getting results for the people of the ward and I will be a strong voice on their behalf at City Hall. I’m also ready to bring new energy and fresh ideas to the council table.”

Shoemaker’s campaign will focus on three major themes: encouraging new development, a balanced approach to spending, and transparency and openness.

“We need to energize our municipal government,” remarks Shoemaker. “Our next council can’t afford to be a passive one, as it will have to grapple with the likely prospect of reduced funding from the provincial government. We need to begin preparing today, by considering bold and innovative ideas that will strengthen our city’s economy and financial position.”

A lifelong Sault Ste. Marie resident, Shoemaker is a graduate of Algoma University and St. Mary’s College.

After graduating from Algoma U, Shoemaker attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his law degree.

Shoemaker entered the 2014 race out of a desire to help with the work of improving his community.

“I’m passionate about Sault Ste. Marie and I want to see it grow and thrive. Our next city council must be willing to take bold actions in order to spur business investment, reduce spending growth, and govern transparently. In the coming months, I will be releasing several proposals that will address these issues. I look forward to discussing them with voters as the campaign progresses.” says Shoemaker.
