Our valorous chief functionary Christian Provenzano got up this morning, scarfed down a blueberry muffin with coffee, went to the Civic Centre and announced he's organizing a program to provide healthy summer breakfasts for kids.

"Hundreds and hundreds of children across our community are dependent on the breakfast programs offered through our school boards during the year," the mayor said.

"Unfortunately, a lot of the children who are dependent on the food programs provided through our school system go without when school is out."

Mayor Provenzano has set a fundraising target of $25,000 to buy fresh fruit, yogurt, milk, cereal and other healthy breakfast options.

The food will be purchased by Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services staff and summer students, and distributed through Social Services neighbourhood summer programming, with guidance and assistance from Algoma Family Services.

The mayor's staff is also looking into the possibility of providing healthy snacks at the Greco and Manzo pools.

Mayor Provenzano is hoping to start his Every Breakfast Counts program in July.

He's approaching local businesses to see whether they're able to help.

Financial contributions to Every Breakfast Counts can be made through the mayor's office or the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District.
