On Feb. 28 at 11 a.m., Jerry and Gisele Verdecchia of Sault Ste. Marie, ON won $40,417.50 in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s (SAHF) February electronic and online 50/50 draw. Their lucky number (D-2314151) was drawn electronically, and the winners visited SAHF to validate their ticket later that afternoon.

“I have purchased tickets since the first draw; I just thought it was a great fundraiser. We’ve seen great care at Sault Area Hospital and wanted to support it.” said Jerry. “I got my ticket early on in February. I heard something on the radio about the draw and I didn’t think much about it at the time but I went to get another one. The prize was at about $20,000 at that point. Turns out that second ticket was the winner and the prize doubled by the time they drew.”

On Friday afternoon, the Verdecchia’s were brainstorming what they could do to with their winnings. They talked about making a few home renovations, and booking a vacation.

“Either way – first, we’re going to celebrate over dinner,” Gisele decided.

The SAHF 50/50 draws in December and January both saw jackpots over $27,000. This month’s prize was even higher, thanks to a 48 per cent increase in sales. The prize is determined by 50 per cent of sales in the month.

“I have to start by congratulating two very kind winners,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director of Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “While they’re walking away with the prize, everyone in our community is winning with this draw. Thanks to our incredibly generous supporters, we’re able to put 50 per cent of ticket sales toward medical equipment for our hospital. We’ve identified a few items our hospital needs that we can now purchase because of your support. Thank you to everyone who purchases these tickets – you’re helping make outstanding care possible.”

While provincial funding covers the operation of the hospital, the community buys the equipment used to provide care. Proceeds from SAHF lotteries (like SAHF 50/50) are used to purchase new technology and replace aging equipment at Sault Area Hospital.

Tickets for SAHF’s March 50/50 draw are on sale now! The prize is guaranteed at $9,999, but (as seen this month) can grow much higher.

Tickets will be available for purchase until March 30 at 9 p.m., and the draw will take place on March 31 at 11 a.m.

SAHF 50/50 tickets are available for purchase across Ontario at www.soo5050.ca. Tickets can be purchased in-person every weekday at Sault Area Hospital (the SAH Main Lobby and Foundation office).
