Local golfer Frank Kucher says he's at a definite advantage against other golfers this week at the Canadian Club Championships at Crimson Ridge.
This is the first-ever Canadian Club Championship held in northern Ontario.
Opening ceremonies started tonight at 6 p.m. with the tournament kicking off tomorrow.
111 golfers from across Canada are participating, including two locals Frank Kucher and Greg McLellan.
Kucher (shown) was taking a practise putt on the 16th hole whe SooToday.com caught up with him today.
He doesn't know of any specific golfers to watch out for, but he's going to take advantage of his knowledge of the course.
"I know there are a lot of golfers out there and I'm lucky to be familiar with the course. I've been practicing putting and chipping on the greens today. A lot of putting," Kucher said.
More than 80 volunteers at helping out with the event, and Royal Canadian Golf Association spokesman Dan Pino says it's being held like any other professional event.
"It's a full-on championship. Nothing here is done halfway."
"It's a chance to profile the golf community here and show the quality of the courses in Sault Ste. Marie," Pino said.
With players coming from around the country, there shouldn't be any lack of community support.
"We've got a great mix of young kids and veterans playing this week. It's a wide range of competitors out here today. They;re all champions," said Pino.
