Donna Mansfield was out skiing with her grandkids on Feb. 28 when the Sault Area Hospital Foundation called to tell her she had the winning ticket.
The winning number (F-10062733) was drawn electronically, and Mansfield – who was the contact on the ticket – was called immediately.
Mansfield, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., had purchased the ticket with Virginia MacKinnon, Terri Finlayson, Kim Streich-Poser, all from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., along with Beth Grant of Sudbury.
They won a $78,942 jackpot in the Sault Area Hospital Foundation’s 50/50 draw for February.
Mansfield couldn’t believe they won.
“There’s a group of us so this is so exciting! We’ve been playing the SAHF 50/50 since the draws started,” she said.
After the call, Mansfield sent an urgent message out to the group saying “you have to call me right away.”
The group matched the energy with “lots of screaming and excitement, it was so much fun!” Mansfield said.
Each person has different plans for their winnings but house renovations, paying bills, travelling and sharing with family were top of mind. Splitting the pot five ways, each person will take home $15,788.40, said a news release.
“It’s great to see another group win! We have seen groups of family, friends, and co-workers come together to support Sault Area Hospital Foundation,” said Teresa Martone, executive director for the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
“This group may have taken home the cash, but we’re all winners when we
support local health care. Every ticket purchased helps support the purchase of medical equipment for our community.”
Mansfield and her group weren’t the only winners this month – February’s Early Bird, Mark Dunn of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., was the lucky winner of $10,000 on Feb. 13, with ticket J-23527342.
