GALLERY: Five years ago, a massive fire broke out downtown

From the archives: Sault Ste. Marie firefighters fought through freezing temperatures to contain a huge blaze that erupted on Queen Street East five years ago this week

In Sault Ste. Marie, fires don't get much nastier than this one.

Five years ago this week — on Jan. 31, 2019 — crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Queen Street East for two buildings fully engulfed in flames. It didn't take long for photos to start circulating on social media, and on SooToday.

It was so cold that day, -28C, that the firefighters' hoses actually froze.

The photo gallery above shows the severity of the fire and the damage done.
