As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has lifted the Ontario-wide restricted fire zone originally imposed on June 1.
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services reminds residents that only those with valid open-air fire permits will be permitted to burn.
"Sault Fire Services would like to remind all citizens to burn with caution and follow the provisions of the Open-Air Burning for the Municipality of Sault Ste. Marie," says a news release issued by Fire Services. "Failure to follow the provisions of open-air burning can lead to permit suspension or rescission."
Certified propane and natural gas fire pits, fireplaces, and fire tables do not require burning permits.
Burn permits can be renewed or applied for online.
"All new permits require a site inspection by a fire prevention officer before open-air burning can be approved," the release says.
