“May 1 is First Responders Day. Today we recognize and are especially grateful for all first responders,” declared Robert Rushworth, Chief of Paramedic Services for the District of Sault Ste. Marie.

The District of Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services personnel are proud to be a part of the dedicated professional and volunteer first responder family. Many of us wear uniforms and are easily recognized but there are many others who are less visible until called into action.

We are lucky to be surrounded by communities that support their volunteer fire and emergency response teams. Those first responders who drop their lives to respond when called upon at all hours of the day and night. Locally we are also home to one of the oldest volunteer search and rescue squads in Canada, Sault Search and Rescue. This specialized group of volunteers is always ready when called.

We ask that you take a minute today to think about the many first responders that work and volunteer to keep your community safe day and night, making a choice to put themselves in harm’s way to serve you.

“First responders are those men and women who, in the early stages of an emergency, are responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence and the environment. They include police officers, firefighters, military personnel, paramedics, medical evacuation pilots, dispatchers, nurses, doctors, emergency medical technicians and emergency managers.

First responders are volunteers and professionals who have dedicated their lives to public service. Their life-saving skills often make the difference between life and death. Their public service deserves to be recognized and honoured.”
