The U.S. Coast Guard Station Sault Ste. Marie rescued a dog, Cujo, from the icy waters of the St. Marys River Wednesday.

Sector Northern Great Lakes Command Centre received a notification from local dispatch of a dog stranded on the ice near the Soo Locks early this morning.

The command centre confirmed there were no persons on the ice or in distress and notified Station Sault Ste. Marie who responded with an ice rescue team. The station crew rescued the dog and safely transported him back to shore where he was reunited with his owner.

“Once on scene, the dog readily accepted the help and cuddled right up to our ice rescue team member during the transit back to the station,” said Cory Cichoracki, operations unit controller at Sector Northern Great Lakes.

“We greatly appreciate Michigan State Police and Army Corps of Engineers for coming together to bring the dog home."
