City councillors plan annual chinwag with their U.S. doppelgängers

Port project and plans for the Sault Ontario waterfront are on the agenda

Sault Ste. Marie city council members will hold a joint meeting next week with their counterparts from the Michigan Sault.

Mayor Don Gerrie and members of the Sault Ste. Marie City Commission will cross the International Bridge on Monday for a joint meeting with our Mayor Matthew Shoemaker and his city councillors at the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.

The meeting is planned for 5 p.m. Monday and will be live-streamed on SooToday.

Here's what's on the agenda:

  • Rick Van Staveren, the Ontario Sault's director of economic development, will talk about the Algoma port proposal
  • Travis Anderson, Ontario Sault's director of tourism and community development, will make a presentation about our waterfront revitalization
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will provide an update on the Sault Locks project
  • Peter Petainen, International Bridge Authority general manager, will give a bridge update
  • Lake Superior State University's new president Dr. David Travis will be introduced

The Ontario Sault's city council will also hold a special meeting of its own starting at 4:30 p.m. Monday that will also be live-streamed on SooToday.
