The United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District's annual effort to provide disadvantaged families in the area with grocery store gift cards, winter accessories and grooming products – not to mention toys for the children – is getting ready to roll.

The application lines for families will open on Nov. 1. If you are part of a family in need in the Sault and area (north to Batchwana and east to Bruce Mines) call 705-575-5100, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The deadline to apply for a Christmas Cheer hamper for Christmas 2023 is Friday, Dec. 1, the United Way said in a news release.

And for those in the spirit of giving, the Christmas Cheer Depot will be open as of Nov. 13, located in former Walmart in Station Mall (inside mall entrance).

Organizers say this year's drive is accepting new toys and gently used dolls, puzzles, games, and books. Gift cards, new mitts, scarves, hats, and grooming items are also gladly accepted.

Delivery of the Christmas Cheer baskets will take place one day only on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
