Sault Ste Marie Fire Services dispatched five vehicles to a residence on Birkshire Place when a fire alarm was received at 8:38 p.m. this evening.
A subsequent call from the residence advised them it was a false alarm, so four trucks were recalled before they left the fire halls.
One truck proceeded to the scene as a precaution. There, firefighters found that chestnuts had been roasted over a fire, platoon chief Michael Dionisi told SooToday.
Fire experts advise paying attention whenever roasting chestnuts. They can give off a lot of smoke, Dionisi said.
Experts suggest roasting chestnuts should never be left unattended. Chestnuts that are roasted before they have been punctured or nicked can explode.
