Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims. It is a time of spiritual reflection, prayer, and fasting. Here are some key aspects of Ramadan and fasting:
Fasting
- Purpose: Fasting during Ramadan, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, aims to cultivate self-discipline, self-restraint, and empathy for those who are less fortunate.
Spiritual Practices
- Prayer: Muslims participate in additional prayers, including Taraweeh (nightly prayers).
- Quran Recitation: Many Muslims strive to complete the recitation of the entire Quran during this month.
- Charity (Zakat and Sadaqah): Acts of giving to those in need are strongly encouraged, with a heightened focus on charity during Ramadan.
Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, began this year on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, and will end on Saturday, March 29, 2025 (or Monday, March 30, depending on the moon sighting). The actual beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, or astronomical calculations. Because of this, the actual date when Ramadan begins each year differs from year to year.
For Muslims around the world, this period serves as a deeply spiritual and collective experience to bring the believers closer to Allah and to remind them of the suffering of those who are less fortunate.
